چکیده

The spatial distribution of sperm within the sperm storage tubules (SST) found in the uterovaginal junction (UVJ) of the turkey is not known. In this study, we inseminated sperm stained with a fluorescent dye (Hoechst 33342) to determine their distribution in SST in the ventral, dorsal, and lateral regions of the proximal, middle, and distal regions of the UVJ. There was no preferential filling in the ventral-dorsal axis of the UVJ. In contrast, preferential filling of the SST was observed in the middle section of the UVJ. Here the individual SST were clearly longer and more pleomorphic than the SST in the more proximal and distal aspects of the UVJ. While no information on the temporal aspect of SST filling by sperm could be gleaned, it is evident that the more morphologically developed SST either accept sperm more readily or store sperm more efficiently than SST elsewhere in the UVJ.

Localization of aquaporins in the sperm storage tubules in the turkey oviduct.

Oviductal sperm storage tubules (SST), located at the uterovaginal junction, are the primary site of sperm storage in turkeys. Sperm reside within these storage sites and may be released via a dynamic interaction between sperm mobility and a fluid current generated by the SST epithelial cells. In this study, aquaporins 2, 3, and 9 (proteins that form water channels in the plasmalemma of a varie...

Alkaline phosphatase reactivity in the vagina and uterovaginal junction sperm-storage tubules of turkeys in egg production: implications for sperm storage.

1. Currently there remains contradictory information on the localisation and possible role of alkaline phosphatase (AP) in the chicken and Japanese quail oviducts. 2. Using turkeys with a hard-shelled egg in their uteri, vaginal and uterovaginal junction mucosae were stretched and fixed as whole mounts prior to the histochemical localisation of AP activity. 3. Scattered AP reactive cells were o...

Numbers and Distribution of Sperm in the Uterovaginal Sperm Storage Tubules of the Zebra Finch’

The number and distribution of sperm in the sperm storage tubules (SSTs) in the uterovaginal junction (UVJ) of the Zebra Finch (Poephila guttata) oviduct was examined under three copulation patterns: single insemination, multiple insemination by the same male, and multiple insemination by two males in sequence. The proportion of SSTs containing sperm varied markedly between birds (range = 22-99...

Fate of fluorescent stained sperm following insemination: new light on oviducal sperm transport and storage in the turkey.

A novel approach was used to evaluate the distribution of sperm in the oviduct of turkey hens inseminated before or after the onset of egg production. Prior to insemination, sperm were stained with the nuclear fluorescent stain bisbenzimide. Sperm distribution in the sperm storage tubules (SST) of the uterovaginal junction and the infundibular tubular glands was determined by use of simultaneou...

Evidence for the innervation of sperm storage tubules in the oviduct of the turkey (Meleagris gallopavo).

The presence of neural tissue and smooth muscle elements in the vicinity of the oviductal sperm storage tubules at the uterovaginal junction was assessed by several modes of light microscopy. Isolated neurones and small ganglia were identified in the uterovaginal junction of the turkey oviduct. The nerve cell bodies were observed in the tunica mucosa by bright field microscopy. Immunoreactivity...
